The UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Team, sponsored by Mubadala Investments, made an impressive start to the first day of the Paris Open Grand Prix 2023, picking up six medals in events organized by the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation , including two gold medals.

Khaled Al Shehhi and Omar Al Suwaidi shined for Team UAE as they won gold in the 62kg and 56kg categories respectively. Muhammad Ali Al-Suwaidi and Theab Al-Nuaimi also won silver in the 69kg and 56kg categories, while Sharma Al Karbani and Sultan Jabr took bronze in the 63kg and 69kg categories.

The UAE’s impressive start puts them in a good position heading into Day Two, which will feature more than 250 men and women from 22 countries.

Commenting on the performance of the UAE National Team, Mubarak Al Menhali, Director of the Technical Department of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, praised the team’s excellent performance on Saturday and their ability to execute the plans and tactics developed with the technical staff, reflecting the country’s leadership in the sport.

“The national team players have shown great physical and mental fitness during the game. Their ability to outperform a group of experienced international players shows the enthusiasm and sense of responsibility with which they continue on the road of achievement. This road is marked by their victories this year. It started at the last Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand in February,” Al Menhali added.

According to Al Menhali, all men’s and women’s national team players performed at a high level and most of them made it to the podium. He noted that there is still an opportunity to increase the team’s medal tally as some champions will be contested the next day.

According to Ramon Lemos, coach of the UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Team, their strategies for international tournaments, such as the Paris Grand Prix Open, involve optimal preparation and exposure to elite players, which will be crucial for their participation in upcoming events such as the World Championships in Mongolia Games and the Chinese Asian Games.

“I am very satisfied with the performance of the players on the first day of the competition. Although we missed two gold medals due to some minor problems, these games are very important to improve the ability of our players and improve their concentration in the game. Experience Abundant adversaries enable us to suppress and conquer them effectively.”

Omar Al Suwaidi, who won the gold medal in the 56kg category, said, “I am delighted to have won the gold medal and hoisted the UAE flag on the podium. The reason behind this achievement is the tireless efforts, systematic training and unlimited support from wise leadership. Doubtless, this win will motivate us to deliver more and follow a winning mentality in the upcoming games and cement the UAE’s global dominance in the sport.”

Khaled Al-Shehhi, who won the gold medal in the 62kg category, attributed his success to teamwork, team spirit, and the great effort put in by federations and technical staff in qualifying, training and providing camps to improve expected levels.

He added: “We have a number of important events coming up, including the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour, World Championships and other important competitions. Today’s result will certainly motivate us to perform well and we are rigorously preparing to compete at multiple levels .”
