Comprehensive evidence-based guide to help parents determine if their child needs additional support
The UAE capital has launched a new initiative that provides parents and carers with a starting point and key information to help support children with developmental delays or disabilities.
The Early Childhood Authority (ECA) Abu Dhabi has launched the Abu Dhabi Early Intervention Guidelines as part of the Abu Dhabi People of Determination Strategy 2020-2024 to provide key resources outlining early childhood interventions available to families and carers Intervention services, and their stunted or disabled children in Abu Dhabi.
The initiative was implemented in partnership with Mubadala Investments, Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development, Abu Dhabi Ministry of Health, Zayed High People’s Organization and Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre.
The guidance is part of ECA’s ongoing efforts to promote the well-being of children, including those of determination in Abu Dhabi, and to enhance early detection of developmental challenges to support children receiving appropriate and timely intervention services.
Designed to provide support and assistance to children with developmental delays or disabilities, this guide provides parents and carers with key information to help them provide professional and ongoing support to children in the early years, as well as a guide to intervention services that can be used to help children grow, develop and reach their full potential.
This intervention addresses the health and well-being of children and the needs of their families by focusing on four key areas of child development – ​​physical development, cognitive development, behavioural development and social and emotional development.
The guide is available in Arabic and English on the ECA’s website.

Thamer Rashed Al Qasimi, Executive Director, Special Projects and Partnerships, ECA, said: “The Abu Dhabi Early Intervention Guidelines are designed to meet the needs of parents and carers in coping with child developmental delays and disabilities, providing them with key information to help them support those with developmental delays. “Early intervention services can effectively promote the development of children’s abilities and skills, reduce the impact of disability on their growth and development, and enhance children’s ability to integrate into society and achieve better results in future life.”
The guide supports the implementation of Abu Dhabi’s strategy to fully include people of determination by promoting comprehensive support for child development and positioning Abu Dhabi as a global hub for early childhood development.

“Early childhood interventions are based on preventive, multidisciplinary approaches from which the services provided by partners are derived, the effectiveness of which is directly related to the early detection of disability or developmental delay,” added Al Qasimi.
“The first five years of a child’s life are critical in terms of development and learning. The first three years, when a child experiences rapid development, are also particularly important.”
