Cancer patients in the UAE are supported by a new community in Pink Caravan.

The group, Amal, which means “hope” in Arabic, was formed by Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), a UAE-based non-profit organization, in preparation for the 11th Pink Caravan Ride (PCR).

The support group will provide a welcoming space for breast cancer patients and survivors in the UAE to engage in a close-knit community where individuals can share their personal experiences.

According to FoCP, cancer patients and survivors often face cognitive and emotional decline. They experience problems with concentration, slow processing, memory impairment, loneliness, anxiety and distress. These deficits have a major impact on their well-being and quality of life.

The organization believes that support groups will serve as a platform for patients and survivors to receive moral support from those who have actually been through the same situation or who have extensive knowledge and experience in providing emotional and psychological support.

purpose

The group aims to instill persistence and hope in breast cancer patients, while providing them with every type of help they need. Group members will be able to set and edit goals as a way of coping with difficulties.

According to FoCP, one of the organization’s goals is to educate patients. Support groups will address misconceptions and myths about breast cancer and cancer-related treatments that can lead to confusion. It acts as a hub for fact-checking, demystifying incorrect news, and explaining the truth.

Another purpose is to provide psychological and spiritual support. Members can provide psychological support to each other while sharing accounts of similar experiences, allowing them to connect and bond with one another. It will also help members share their expertise on how to deal with potential side effects of treatment from their perspective, both physical and emotional, enabling them to make new friends who fully understand and help them.

encourage and empower

‘Amal’ is a platform for members to arrange group-led activities, including conferences, outdoor group walks, upcoming activities and events, and even workshops to further strengthen their relationships and social cohesion. It encourages them to volunteer with breast cancer awareness campaigns and to be an inspiration to other breast cancer patients and survivors.

One of the most important functions of support groups is to denounce the stigma surrounding breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and survival. It significantly improves confidence and self-esteem. It will empower a woman to express her opinions and emotions openly, while inspiring her to lead, encourage and inspire other team members and the community.

The 11th edition of the Pink Caravan Ride (PCR), a breast cancer awareness initiative of FoCP, will commemorate the event with a unique awareness program commemorating the 11th edition of the Pink Caravan Ride (PCR) with an annual ride across the emirate commencing 4th February to coincide with World Cancer Day Internationally recognized date for all types of cancer.
