UAE: New tools to improve Covid safety at Expo 2020 Dubai-News

Ministry of Health-Abu Dhabi (DoH), the regulator of the UAE’s healthcare sector, today announced the development and deployment of a pioneering epidemiological modeling tool to be used during the 2020 Dubai Expo.

The news was announced at a ceremony held at Expo 2020, and the department gathered many strategic partners including Expo 2020, Abu Dhabi Public Health Center (ADPHC) and Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU).

This epidemiological modeling tool is called the “Expo 2020 Model” and was developed by researchers from Khalifa University in collaboration with DoH and ADPHC to improve the safety of visitors to Expo 2020 Dubai; it is expected in the next six months An international event that will attract millions of visitors.

The tool works by evaluating simulated scenarios that combine the expected number of visitors with existing knowledge of the Covid-19 disease dynamics. In this way, the tool provides a dedicated working model based on key epidemiological data and information developed by the Abu Dhabi team in the past 20 months, and draws on local and global leading expertise knowledge.

This enables health authorities to predict the expected impact on the healthcare sector, assess the required capabilities in a timely manner, and develop the best healthcare solutions for residents and visitors as the number of cases increases. The analytical power used to develop this complex tool has proven successful through its contribution to monitoring and decision-making, which has led to Abu Dhabi being named a leading city in response to Covid-19.

Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi, Deputy Minister of Health, ADPHC Director-General Matar Saeed Al Nuaimi, Executive Director Najeeb Al-Ali of Expo 2020 Dubai, and Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice President of Khalifa University of Technology signed the agreement. The pandemic has made this commitment even more attention, and we have worked tirelessly throughout the organization to ensure that we follow The latest guidelines and close cooperation with local and international authorities, including world-class health authorities in the UAE.

Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Hamed said: “Today, Abu Dhabi continues to support the UAE’s efforts to ensure the health and safety of its citizens, residents, and visitors by adopting the latest advanced technologies. The development of this epidemiological modeling tool represents an order. This incredible milestone will undoubtedly help to host a safer and more successful Expo 2020.”

“This model not only protects the health and safety of the community, but also enhances business continuity and minimizes the impact of the spread of infectious diseases.”

Matar Al Nuaimi said: “We are pleased to abide by this mutual agreement aimed at protecting all community members through the joint efforts of all parties. This unique tool represents a major leap forward in the UAE’s response to the epidemic.”

Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi said: “We are proud to work with key stakeholders to contribute to the success of Expo 2020, and based on the first two models developed by our local researchers to provide this prestigious event Innovative epidemiological modeling tools highlight the global contribution of Khalifa University’s local research program.”

Abu Dhabi’s powerful advanced digital infrastructure provides fertile ground for the development of this tool and its eventual application at the 2020 Dubai World Expo. Based on the theme of Expo 2020 Dubai, “Connecting Thoughts, Creating the Future”, the model will pave the way for a new tool that can be used to manage health and safety in future local and international large-scale events.

The researchers who developed the tool are Associate Professor Jorge Rodriguez of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Mauricio Patton, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering, and Dr. Juan Acuna, Professor and Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Khalifa University. The tool relies on the previous two Iterations, the first of which was developed in April 2020. The second version was developed in October 2020 to help launch a vaccination campaign in the UAE.

The Expo 2020 model combines several key input data, such as the number of tourists from all over the world and several epidemiological parameters by age, including transmission rate and infection risk.

The results are displayed on an interactive dashboard, allowing end users to change key parameters and observe the real-time impact of the pandemic. The modeling tool mainly focuses on providing accurate comparisons between different scenarios in order to provide decision makers with the correct information needed to take action, followed by predictive numbers.
