Rashid Rover’s first few days scheduled to go to the moonThe Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC) has released a mobile-based augmented reality (AR) experience to give anyone the chance to navigate the lunar surface.

According to MBRSC, the AR experience will allow “you to drive an ultra-accurate digital twin of the Rashid rover on a 1:1 scale across the lunar surface to learn about its intrepid lunar exploration.”

“Our goal is to spark curiosity and get people of all ages to explore the lunar surface with the Rashid rover,” said MBRSC Director Salem Humaid Al Marri, adding: “Through this interactive AR experience, we hope Spark imagination and foster interest in space, science and technology.

“This unique experience, available in English and Arabic, is accessible to everyone using a smartphone and internet browser, and it’s completely free,” continued Al Marri.

MBRSC notes that through the AR experience, you can “discover facts about the Rasheed rover and how its mission will open the door to understanding the Moon and enabling future space exploration.”

Highly detailed 3D models of the rover and the lunar surface have been optimized to create a smooth AR experience accessible through an internet browser. Since accessibility is a key element of educational content, everyone can have this cross-platform experience without installing an app.

MBRSC announced earlier Rashid rover plans to land On the Moon on Tuesday, April 25 at 8.40pm (UAE time). Alternative landing dates are April 26, May 1 and May 3.

The UAE-built rover is now safely stored in a special compartment on Japan’s lunar lander Hakuto-R, which was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape Canaveral space station in Florida, U.S., in December sent to space

The Rashid rover — named after the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the builder of modern Dubai — will study a lunar day around the Moon, equivalent to 14.75 days.
