‘UAE Obesity Conference’ returns to Abu Dhabi for fourth year

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The UAE Obesity Conference has opened registration and announced the keynote and featured speakers for its forthcoming fourth annual conference on 26-27 November 2022. The event will again feature guests from Abu Dhabi Public Health Center (ADPHC) and Mubadala Health, including Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, Healthpoint and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

With the support of ADPHC, the world’s foremost authorities on obesity will gather in Abu Dhabi for a global conference on the theme “New Dawn”. In his keynote address, Dr. John Wilding, President of the World Obesity Federation, will discuss why obesity is a disease and not a choice. The program will also address the stigma associated with obesity from the perspective of patients and healthcare professionals. It will also highlight obesity-related diseases, such as cancer and gastrointestinal disorders, and provide the latest information on obesity management and future strategies to address it.

HE Dr. Omniyat Al Hajeri, Executive Director of ADPHC’s Community Health Sector and selected Mubadala Health doctors, as well as global, regional and local pioneers in the field will be speaking at the event. These include Professor Donna Ryan, former President of the World Obesity Federation, Dr Carel le Roux from University College Dublin, Dr Ebaa Al Ozairi from the Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait, and Dr Nasreen Alfaris from King Fahd Medical City, UK. Dr Noor Al Busaidi, KSA, Saudi Arabia and Ministry of Health, Oman.

Dr Sara Suliman, Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist at Imperial College London Diabetes Center and Dr Mohammed Al Hadad, Consultant Bariatric Surgery and Head of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery at Healthpoint, will co-chair the event again this year.

On the occasion, His Excellency Dr Omniyat Al Hajeri said: “As part of our ongoing efforts to increase health awareness and promote a healthy and safe community, we are proud to support the 4th UAE Obesity Conference. It is vital to produce productive dialogue, disseminate information, and facilitate access to healthcare professionals to ensure individuals have the knowledge and resources necessary to combat diseases such as obesity and seek appropriate care. We recommend that all members of society adopt healthy lifestyles as early as possible, Making proper dietary choices and participating in a variety of physical activities will help improve the quality of life of community members.Through this participation, we hope not only to promote a healthy lifestyle, but also to allow physicians and all other qualified Healthcare professionals are able to support their patients through structured lifestyle interventions and education, and when medically indicated, in accordance with international best practice and guidelines. We also want to encourage the fight against the stigma associated with this disease , as well as foster emotional resilience in patients, avoiding clinically unnecessary risky weight loss methods and interventions.”

Dr Mohammed Al Hadad said: “We have been battling many epidemics around the world. We have seen the world urgently unite to fight COVID-19. However, this is not the case for the obesity epidemic that has been around for much longer “Obesity is a complex, lifestyle, neurobehavioral disease, and obese people are especially susceptible. We know they are at increased risk for comorbidities, which can lead to death. Through this year’s conference, we will share Lessons learned, and how we can fight this disease together.”

Commenting on obesity and cardiovascular disease, Dr Hani Sabbour, staff physician at the Institute of Cardiology, Heart, Vascular and Chest at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said: “Obesity remains one of the most serious comorbidities in the UAE with significant The negative impact on many chronic diseases, such as those related to the heart, is that any extra weight puts extreme stress on the heart muscle. This aggravates the patient’s condition and the outcome of the treatment, and can have numerous complications. Sadly, the disease carries a stigma that discourages those affected from seeking treatment as it is seen as a choice rather than a disease. These campaigns help raise awareness of the latest research on obesity treatment awareness, providing insights into alternative treatments for diseases such as cancer and gastrointestinal problems, and the impact of obesity on the heart and vascular system. Ultimately emphasizing that obesity is a disease not a choice and its management should be everyone’s Priorities.”
