Emirates team officials are naturally on edge following Sunday’s crash, with team captain Taddj Pogachar set to witness the two-time Tour de France winner undergo surgery.

Team principal Mauro Gianetti confirmed that Pogačar had broken “multiple” bones in his wrist and hand when he crashed from Liege-Bastogne-Liege on Sunday, about 85 kilometers from the race.

“It’s not good news. He has multiple fractures in his left wrist,” Gianetti told Eurosport. “He will be operated on directly at the hospital in Genk. [Belgium] By hand specialists.

“Tadej was there with the team doctors, we took him to the hospital and he had an MRI,” he said. “I’ll talk to him after the surgery.”

Gianetti said Pogačar was also forced to give up after being knocked out by what he described as a “double puncture” involving EF Education-EasyPost driver Mikkel Honoré.

“It was a double puncture on the Honoré, and as the tires exploded, that led to the crash,” Gianetti said. “He was involved in a crash. That’s what happens in cycling, and this time it was him.”

The good news is that there don’t appear to be any more serious injuries or setbacks following cycling’s biggest star’s crash.

Of course, the big question now is how the wrist injury will affect Pogačar’s season and return to the Tour de France in July.

After a busy spring season, Pogačar should be rested anyway, with his next scheduled race not until the Slovenian Tour in June.

Even though he may take some time off the bike during his recovery, Pogačar could ride an indoor trainer to keep him fit for training in July.

Gianetti said the team will have more information after surgery.

“It’s too early to say. We’ll have more information after the surgery to see how it goes and whether they can fix it. It’s going to be more serious because it’s not just one broken bone, it’s multiple bones. It’s more complicated,” Gianetti said. “So we’re praying that everything will be alright and that he will be able to recover very quickly.”

The crash marked the rare occasion for Pogačar to miss a race and even issue a DNF.

The incident also pulled Pogačar out of the race to complete the so-called sweep of the Ardennes and undercut the much-anticipated clash with Remco Evenepoel, who ultimately won it in dominant fashion.
