Peek into the cultural landscape of the UAE

Not all art works are in galleries, most have now made their way to hotels in the city, where people can sample all forms of art (including performing arts) over a cup of coffee, a bowl of pasta, etc; as we recently did in Downtown Dubai As Sofitel did with the multidimensional exhibition Regards de France in partnership with the EMA Agency. As we entered the hotel lobby, we were greeted by exquisite brushes – an installation by artist Quentin Desmit (if anyone may say so!) in France, Belgium and England in the 80s, His interest in art blossomed here. Talking about the art installation in the lobby, he mentioned how he highlighted oil barrels as an element in this Fantasia series (resin sculptures), telling about the UAE’s history, richness, contribution to oil reserves and more. Not to be missed is his other resin sculpture “Dancing Blue Brush” in the lobby.

On the same floor of the café, come face-to-face with the work of 11 female artists, collectively known as Feminin Pluriel; their work fuses paintings, photographs, and more; each exploring and embodying different aspects of femininity in countless fascinating ways. “This exhibition is the fruit of a wondrous encounter between the artists that created a desire to tell a story together – a story about women,” said the artists. Bianca Dolman’s Revelateur (acrylic print) with the bold lettering Keep It Feminine is a fun, bold graffiti-inspired piece. Viktoria Awana Ebode’s striking work “Mother and Child” is the one that caught our eye the most. She enjoys traveling and doing digital photography, and her artist of choice is Jord Hammond. Ceramicist Alison Ladegaillerie’s “Dance in the Desert” is a photograph of sculpture inspired by nature; she is observant of movement and is passionate about capturing the curves of her work. There’s more on display at La Patisserie Lounge. “Say a little, or a lot. Express yourself as women. Witness how we see and interpret femininity, both within and outside of our intimacy, while taking into account our diversity,” is how the artists summed up their collaboration .

Meanwhile, at the hotel’s L’Apero restaurant, people are invited to admire and absorb Cathy Deniset’s work – aptly titled “My Dubai Feelings”, which depicts her passion for everything from palm trees to pets to cars Respect and appreciation for simple living; as the artists describe, “The energy in Dubai is so real, powerful, crazy, it drives me into higher, quieter thinking. In the beginning, many projects were just pipes, stones and Plastic; won’t be an incredible icon later.” At the end of this month (October 24th), families will have the opportunity to customize sneakers in a special workshop at Julié Custom Art, while enjoying a delicious afternoon tea with artists from Drawing inspiration from narrative and memory, she embeds nostalgic elements of stories and memories in her work. The exhibition will end with a presentation of the artist’s “Art de France”, live entertainment in the evening, and more; thus truly giving art lovers the opportunity to explore the “Art of Living”, the Art of Living, in a French way!

At Sofitel Downtown Dubai, Until October 15th.
