At least 580 drug addicts have been treated and helped with drug rehabilitation during the “Opportunity for Hope” campaign, which was launched in Abu Dhabi last year to help people with addiction problems.

Brigadier-General Taher Gharib Al Dhaheri, Director of Narcotics Control at Abu Dhabi Police, said the initiative helps raise awareness of the dangers of drugs, as well as the causes and prevention of drug abuse.

Al Dhaheri noted that parents should advise drug-addicted children to seek help from the police or the National Rehabilitation Centre as no charges will be brought against them.

“Some families are afraid of social stigma and are obsessed with scandal and stigma. This makes them reluctant and cautious to report cases of children’s addiction,” he said, adding that other parents had false information reporting their addicted children to authorities would lead to jail time, which is not true.

Abu Dhabi Police are keen to handle reports received in complete confidentiality and privacy. It aims to provide the patient with the highest standard of treatment through the National Rehabilitation Centre to help him recover.

The UAE has developed a treatment and rehabilitation approach for drug addicts, providing them with care and treatment services and a rehabilitation package to encourage them to seek addiction treatment. According to Act No. 14 of 1995 and its amendments, there are no criminal cases or legal liability for persons who voluntarily seek treatment.

Authorities have always said that everyone has a responsibility to protect society from the scourge of drugs and to tackle drug smuggling by criminal gangs.

In June, Abu Dhabi Police launched a campaign highlighting the critical role families play in preventing drug addiction and supporting the protection of public health.

The campaign, in partnership with the Department of Community Development (DCD), the Women’s General Union and Abu Dhabi Shelter and Humanitarian Care Centre (Ewa’a), highlighted the value of collaboration between parents and relevant entities.

The project targets all community groups, especially youth. It raises awareness of the critical supportive role of positive family communication and showcases advocacy, mentoring programs and rehabilitation.

Major General Maktoum Ali Sharifi, chief of the Abu Dhabi Police, said parents need to play their due supervisory and mentoring role to protect their children and prevent them from falling prey to drugs.

“Families should pay close attention to any unusual changes in their children’s behavior and general appearance, especially teens, to help detect their involvement in substance abuse early,” he said.
