The expat, who has been teaching for the past 19 years, is surprised to receive a special award for her contribution
For Pakistani teacher Suneela Bukhari Salman Chaudhry, it’s not enough to inspire and shape students’ personalities. “You have to be their friend too,” she told Kalij Times.
Suneela is one of them Three outstanding educators in Abu Dhabi surprised by special award World Teachers’ Day on Wednesday. The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (Adek) held an impromptu ceremony for them, presenting them with a bouquet of flowers and a balloon.
“I felt like a princess,” Sunila said, recalling the moment she accepted the award. “I was blown away by their sudden visit to my school. It was an experience of a lifetime because of my dedication to the profession.”
The expat is an English teacher at Islamiya English School in Abu Dhabi who has dedicated her life to her students for the past 19 years.
Speaking of her profession, Suneela says a good teacher is like a candle – “it consumes itself and lights the way for others”.
“I feel like it’s a big responsibility,” she said. “I don’t believe in just being a teacher who teaches a course and walks out of the classroom.” It’s about shaping my students’ personalities and being their friends, making them feel emotionally relaxed and willing to absorb information. “
Making students feel comfortable in the classroom is her top priority. “I focus on the way students learn and work on improving their performance on a personal level. Helping them learn happily is my goal. I am interested in enhancing their talents at different levels,” says Suneela.
As a coordinator of extracurricular activities, she is also particularly passionate about developing children’s hidden talents.
“It’s also important to me that I can help them achieve the desired grades in terms of academic performance,” she said.

Supporting students along the way
If a student needs extra help, Suneela goes to great lengths to find their weak spots and find solutions that can improve their performance.
“I provide example answers for slow learners to help them improve their performance. I also make sure I provide them with peer support as well. I have been able to produce excellent EDEXCEL IGCSE board exam results. My students are in Edexcel board exams 100/100 in English,” she said.
Under her leadership, many students have won multiple intercollegiate competitions. One of the most memorable was her students winning top prizes in inter-school debates and competitions organised by the UAE Environment Agency.
Suneela has also helped thousands of Emirati teachers gain professional licenses by giving them tips through a YouTube channel she created two years ago.
“As a teacher, it feels great to be recognized for my positive contributions. Especially when you’re a teacher who has sacrificed blood, sweat and tears for the profession,” she said.
“Adek has taken such a helpful step and made us feel important. This recognition means a lot to someone like me who is giving it my all for my career.”
Other teachers who received special awards were Greeshma Rajesh Anil Kumar from Mayoor Private School and Daniel Stephen Emery from The British School Al Khubairat. They were selected for their outstanding contribution and enthusiasm.
