UAE participates in WMO Regional Association 1 meeting in Ethiopia

Abu Dhabi – United Arab Emirates: A delegation from the United Arab Emirates led by HE Dr Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) and President of Regional Association II (Asia) participated in the WMO Regional Association Regional Technical Conference Association I (RA I RECO 2023) in 2023 on 2 Held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 13 to 17 March.

His Excellency Mohamed Salem Al-Rashedi, UAE Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, welcomed the UAE delegation to RA I RECO 2023, demonstrating the country’s commitment to international cooperation and partnerships in advancing weather forecasting and meteorological practices. Al-Rashedi extended his best wishes to Dr Al Mandous in the election of WMO President and noted the positive response he had received from delegates and ambassadors who praised his SMART approach and appreciated the UAE’s efforts to find effective solutions to the challenges the world is facing Efforts to address numerous challenges in meteorology, climate and related fields.

On the margins of the Congress, Dr Al Mandous hosted a dinner reception for Permanent Representatives of African countries to WMO and Ambassadors of some African countries to Ethiopia.He also shared a speech on his candidacy for the WMO Presidency for 2023-2027, outlining his vision and commitment to the organization and the world meteorological community.

Dr Al Mandous also met with His Excellency Dr Eng. During the official opening of the conference, Ethiopian Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa Geleta held discussions with other representatives from the region, meteorologists and climate experts, exchanging views on the latest advances in meteorological research and technology.

Dr Al Mandous said: “RA I RECO is an important forum for exchanging ideas, coordinating efforts and identifying regional priorities to enhance the capabilities of NMHSs and provide better weather forecasts and meteorological services using the latest technologies. At NCM, we Committed to partnering with our peers at other NMHSs to support them in driving digital transformation across their service delivery to reduce the risk of natural disasters and improve the quality of life in communities around the world.”

Al Mandous added: “Through my election as WMO President, my aim is to strengthen regional and international cooperation to ensure accurate weather forecasts and climate predictions in all WMO regions, which are critical to climate change mitigation, through the use of appropriate service delivery techniques. Fetene Teshome, Director General of the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute (EMI) and Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to WMO, said: “We are delighted that the UAE delegation participated in RA I RECO 2023, which highlights the importance of international cooperation to advance meteorological science and build early warning systems, which “The system has proven effective in proactively reducing disaster risk. Earlier, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) appointed HE Dr Abdulla Al Mandous, UAE Permanent Representative to WMO and President of Regional Association II (Asia), as an official candidate for WMO’s 2023 – 2027 presidential term.

As part of his campaign, Al Mandous aims to accelerate internationally coordinated action by working with WMO’s key stakeholders to meet the UN Secretary-General’s request to ensure that “everyone on Earth is protected by early warning systems within the next five years”. Conservation takes a five-pillar approach to realize WMO’s vision of increasing resilience to the socio-economic consequences of extreme weather, climate, water and other environmental events. This approach focuses on supporting the role of regional association presidents and permanent representatives, making “early warning for all” a reality, advancing research in high-resolution climate computing, global community endorsement of WMO, and research in water security and renewable energy.
