Plaintiffs seek Dh10,000 compensation from airline
A passenger has sued an UAE airline, accusing its flight attendants of damaging their passports by giving his children shoddy gifts.
According to official court documents, the parents demanded that the airline pay them Dh10,000 in compensation.
The plaintiff said that during the flight, the flight attendant presented his children with promotional gifts, including passport covers featuring Disney characters. Then put the cover on their passport.
It was hours after they arrived home that they realized that their child’s passport had been damaged due to the poor quality of the cover. It cost him financially.
The plaintiffs produced copies of their flight reservations and photos of damaged passports.
The airline has denied any wrongdoing, and its attorneys filed a response memo asking for the case to be dismissed for lack of substance and cause of action.
After the statements of all parties, the court rejected the passenger’s claim and asked him to bear the defendant’s litigation costs.
The Abu Dhabi Court of Family and Civil Administrative Claims said in its ruling that the plaintiff had made a mistake by affixing the covers to the passport or allowing his children or others to do so.
The judge noted that passengers were supposed to protect their family’s official documents and should not have had any other material affixed to them, as affixing any cover with an adhesive substance to a passport was expected to damage it.
