Photonics – the science and technology of light – is the cornerstone of the UAE’s move towards a digital-first economy, says a top researcher at the Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) in Abu Dhabi.

Most recently, the center hosted the brightest minds from the European Photonics Industry Consortium (Epic), a leading industry association promoting the sustainable development of organizations working in the field of photonics.

talk to harrij times Following the visit, DERC Principal Investigator Dr. Chaouki Kasmi stressed that such visits are “vital for building global partnerships” in support of the UAE’s vision to strengthen its advanced technology ecosystem, focusing on an emerging but highly relevant field – photonics .

“The visit is an important platform to showcase the UAE’s innovative approach to promoting technological breakthroughs in photonics and introducing them to a global audience. It underscores the country’s commitment to strengthening its advanced technology landscape and enhancing its reputation as a global innovation hub.”

DERC is part of the Technology Innovation Institute, an international center of excellence for research into advanced directed energy systems and technologies. During their visit, Epic representatives were impressed by the integral state-of-the-art infrastructure and cutting-edge technology at DERC – reflecting the UAE’s broader vision to foster scientific research and development.

“The UAE is currently undergoing an unprecedented upheaval. As the country seeks to expand its knowledge-based innovation economy, collaborative efforts and strategic expertise exchanges will help redefine research thinking and shape a strong R&D ecosystem in the UAE system.”

Dr Kasmi noted that photonics is being applied in fields as diverse as medicine, healthcare, traffic and road safety, telecommunications, climate change mitigation and sustainable development – all national priorities. He said the Epic delegation’s visit was a “catalyst” for further discussions and planning for the development of transformative solutions that could meet the needs of an evolving technology ecosystem. Working with Epic, he said, can develop “breakthrough solutions” that address real-world challenges across multiple domains.

“In medicine and healthcare, photonics impacts every aspect of biological research, from drug development and delivery to medical imaging and genomics, and even robotic guidance in surgery. Additionally, new breakthroughs in photonics are helping to improve telecommunications Energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness of equipment. Another relevant example is the key role that photonics plays in reducing environmental pollution through renewable energy sources – using sensing and instrumentation tools for environmental monitoring, improving the energy efficiency of photovoltaic LED lighting, etc.”

The global optoelectronics market is expected to reach an estimated value of USD 1.1 trillion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 7.3% between 2022 and 2030.

Dr Kasmi’s Year of Sustainability is “the perfect time” to invest in photonics that can support the UAE’s net-zero emission goals.

“Opportunities presented by photonics offer the potential for greater societal impact in the coming decades, including solar power and new types of efficient lighting that can revolutionize the nation’s energy landscape. This will be key to driving continued exponential growth in the knowledge economy Several Epic representatives expressed great interest in serious collaboration in the development of innovative photonic technologies, with a primary focus on the communications sector and supporting the growing demand for 6G technology,” added Dr. Kasmi.
