UAE physical education teacher wins US$1 million global award-News

A PE teacher from Abu Dhabi and a 17-year-old student from Dubai were selected as the top 50 contenders for the prestigious Global Teacher Award and Global Student Award.

Passionate teacher

The Tunisian Riadh was selected from more than 8,000 nominations and applications from 121 countries/regions around the world. He has been keen to help students develop their skills and character through sports since he was a child. Working in a rural area of ​​Tunisia, where there is almost no infrastructure or equipment to practice sports, he initiated and led many sports school clubs, as well as the first girls’ sports association. Currently, Riad teaches at the Zayed Higher Organization in the Gyathi Center in Abu Dhabi.

Later, at the Ghayathi Special Needs Center in the UAE, he introduced an innovative new approach to SEN Sports-in 2019, he launched the first Microsoft education program for people with disabilities in the region. As a result, Riadh’s students have won more than 100 national and international sports awards.

His school has also established new connections throughout the region, which will help it integrate more special education (SEN) students and win the best SEN public center in Abu Dhabi 2020-2021.

In 2020, Riadh won the best teacher of the Abu Dhabi Public Center for the Disabled and was nominated for the Mohammed bin Zayed Best Gulf Teacher Award in the final evaluation. Riadh said that if he wins the Global Teacher Award, he will form an association to support children with disabilities through the use of specially adapted smart learning, augmented and virtual reality tools.

The purpose of setting up the Global Teacher Award is to recognize an outstanding teacher who has made outstanding contributions to the teaching profession and highlight the important role that teachers play in society. By discovering thousands of heroic stories that have changed the lives of young people, the award hopes to turn the outstanding work of millions of teachers around the world into reality.

Persevering Pakistani students

Lamya is the first youth consultant from the UAE and the MENA regional head of the United Nations Foundation Girl Up initiative. Lamya is also the founder and CEO of the youth initiative Resilient Together, which works with international charitable organizations to provide ICT equipment to 20,000 UAE students forced to undergo distance learning due to Covid-this work has received international coverage and attention. Winning the Global Student Award means she is able to fund her university studies and expand Resilient Together to podcast and video platforms.
