The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Tuesday reported 299 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, with 319 recoveries and no deaths.
In what appears to be a world first, the Chinese city of Shanghai began administering an inhalable Covid-19 vaccine on Wednesday.
The vaccine — a mist inhaled through the mouth — is offered free as a booster to people who have previously been vaccinated, according to announcements posted on the city’s official social media accounts.
Needle-free vaccines might convince people who don’t like shots to get vaccinated, and could help expand vaccination coverage in poor countries because they’re easier to administer.
China has no vaccine regulations, but wants more people to get booster shots.
A video released by Chinese state media shows people at a community health center shoving the short spout of a translucent white cup into their mouths. The side text says that a person holds their breath for five seconds after slowly inhaling, and the whole process is done in 20 seconds.
“It’s like drinking a cup of milk tea,” a Shanghai resident said in the video.
“When I inhaled it, it tasted a little sweet.”
Oral vaccines can also stop the virus before it reaches the rest of the respiratory system, but that depends in part on the size of the droplets, one expert said.
