Dubai Destinations: Electric Catamaran Service Operates From The Pointe

With blissful winter weather upon us, now is the perfect time for UAE residents to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy an idyllic sea trip across the Palm Jumeirah aboard an electric catamaran.
To access the boats, visitors must park on the east side of The Pointe and walk to the beach, where you can rent a catamaran from Costa Azzura (“blue coast” in Italian).
After completing your booking, you will be provided with a life jacket and shown how to operate an intercom that connects visitors with an attendant on shore.
They were also shown how to connect the bluetooth speakers on the boat so they could listen to their music while sailing. Or, you can always enjoy the blissful sound of lapping waves.
No previous sailing experience required
The double catamaran has luxurious wooden finishes, a simple yet elegant interior and is covered by a canopy. “No sailing experience required” are the six words every novice sailor wants to hear, and sure enough, an assistant assured us as we headed to our catamaran: “It’s really easy to operate, just like a Playstation.”
We’re not quite sure what he means, but one look at the joystick located between the two seats says it all. “Just press up to go forward, down to go backward, left and right, get it? Easy!” we were told – though it would take a few minutes to maneuver the joystick and learn the catamaran’s speed relative to the wind.
sea journey
For the next 15 or 30 minutes (our recommendation), enjoy the tranquility of the scenic coastline and photograph some of The Palm’s iconic buildings from the sea, such as Atlantis The Palm, Royal Atlantis Majestic architectural structures such as the Si Hotel and the Water World Adventure Park. The Palm Island Monorail also travels across the sea above the catamaran.
“Currently, we have two catamarans, but later this month we will receive four new catamarans from Italy,” said Costa Azzura director Sachin Konga, adding that they will be even more luxurious. Since they’re powered by electricity — no motors — the catamarans are also environmentally friendly, he explained.
Costa Azzura is popular with tourists and residents alike. Has been in operation for about a year. The service was earlier located in West Beach before moving to The Pointe. It operates year-round, but sailing is more popular in the cooler months. “On busy days we run as many as 20 to 30 trips a day,” he said.
Sachin added that tourists always give good feedback after their trips. “They said it was very relaxing and enjoyable.”
travel expenses
For two people, the trip costs AED 200 for 15 minutes and AED 350 for 30 minutes. If you decide to sail alone, the price is AED 100 for 15 minutes and AED 175 for 30 minutes. Opening hours are nine in the morning to eleven in the evening.
For those who love the sparkling lights on the water, the catamaran is equipped with built-in lighting so night trips are also possible
