Sharjah: The Board of Directors of the “Alliance Français” in Sharjah recently held its first meeting at the House of Wisdom (HoW) to discuss the strategy and execution plan for 2023 and to create more opportunities to learn French in Sharjah as a future Center of cultural exchange between France and the UAE.

The meeting was attended by Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, President of the Française de Sharjah; Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, Vice-Chairman of the Française de Sharjah; Hugo Henry Ceylan, Cultural Counselor and President of the French Academy in the UAE, who represented the French Embassy; Emery Kalema, African Institute Assistant Professor of History; and Audrey Leseigneur, Director of the Alliance Française de Sharjah.

Alliance Française is the official French language center in the UAE, offering activities for students to help with homework assigned by French schools.cooperation agreement

Leseigneur opened the conference by presenting the existing and future projects of the Alliance Française in Sharjah, including the cooperation agreement signed at the Department of Government Relations (DGR) headquarters between the French embassy and the affiliates of the Alliance Française in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.

She also discussed future MoUs to be signed; collaboration with the Sharjah Arts Foundation; and partnerships with schools and universities in Sharjah.

Ceylan said: “Alliance Française is the French Center in Sharjah and together with Lycée Français International Georges Pompidou, an educational institution that teaches French in public and private schools in the UAE, they will represent France at our major cultural events such as the Book Fair, the Sharjah Biennale exhibitions and many other important occasions.”

Launched in Sharjah in September 2022, Alliance Française adds new members to the vibrant Alliance Française network in the UAE. The expansion of the alliance is in line with the agreement signed between DGR and the French embassy to facilitate the exchange of expertise and knowledge, enabling French schools and cultural institutions in the UAE to benefit from the alliance’s leadership and to help students master the French language.
