UAE: Sharjah International Children and Youth Film Festival announces 100 films from 43 countries – News

The upcoming ninth edition of the Sharjah International Children and Youth Film Festival (SIFF) will showcase a variety of films from 43 countries, including the UAE.

It will be held at the Al Jawaher Reception and Conference Centre from 10 to 15 October 2022.

SIFF, organised by FUNN, the Sharjah-based entity promoting media arts learning for children and young people, has announced that entries from France, the UK and Saudi Arabia have topped the official shortlist for the 2022 edition of 100 films.

After two years of virtual events, SIFF 2022 will be back in physical form this year. It has received 1,717 film submissions from 89 countries. France, the US and the UAE top the charts with the most submissions.

Under the patronage of Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA), SIFF 2022 will celebrate the diversity of seven categories of films from around the world.

Of the 100 films selected for screening this year, 29 are animated films and 17 are feature films. The number of feature films has more than doubled from last year. Student films accounted for 16 of the 100 films selected.

With 12 films each, the UK leads the children and youth production category, while films from Saudi Arabia account for the majority of short films in the GCC. Seven documentaries and seven international shorts make up the final batch of this year’s official selection.

Announcing the official selection of films, Sheikha Jawaher said: “As the 9th Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth returns to its physical format, this year’s exciting film series will spark the curiosity of young audiences and offer unique Cultural perspectives. From around the world. Our selection of 100 films celebrates diverse voices across the globe through universal lenses of childhood.”

She added: “At the direction of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and Sheikha Jawah bint Mohammed, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, With the support of His Highness Kasimi, FUNN aims to showcase quality films to the younger generation to advance their creative pursuits. SIFF 2022 is also an incredible platform for children and young people to engage with the Connecting films and filmmakers from around the globe.”
