UAE: Sheikh Sultan guides restoration of rare Arabic books at Spain’s El Escorial library

Sharjah: His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who has made significant contributions to the preservation of Arab and Islamic cultural heritage, directed the restoration of Spain’s El Escorial Library Eight rare Arabic books in .

The restoration project is part of his efforts to preserve the Escorial’s global heritage and manuscripts, especially those related to Arabic and Islamic culture.

Books planned for restoration include Ibn Arjomand’s Al Ajrumiyyah, three Qur’ans from 1257, 1402 and 1397, Abu Al Fida’s Summary Book of Human History, Tarikh Al Mukhtasar Fi Akhbar Al Bashar; Al Asfahani’s poetry collection Al Aghani; Al Milal Wa Al Nihal; and Kharidat Al Ajaib Wa Faridat Al Ghraib.

With this initiative, for the first time in the world, Sharjah is contributing to the preservation of the El Escorial Library’s rare books and manuscripts documenting Arab and Islamic history. Sheikh Sultan visited the library in 2019, resulting in cooperation between the emirate and the library in various areas, including restoration and presentation of rare books in Arabic to interested parties.

The restoration project coincides with the opening of the Sharjah Book Authority’s (SBA) exhibition ‘The Escorial Collection of Arabic Manuscripts’. Organized in partnership with the El Escorial Library, the event showcases 14 rare manuscripts dating from the 13th to 16th centuries and runs until April 9. Sharjah is the first city to host an exhibition featuring the largest collection of rare Arab artefacts from the El Escorial library in Spain.

Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Amiri, Chairman of the Sharjah Library Authority, said: “The directive of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammad AlQasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, is to restore the El Escorial Library, a collection of rare Arabic books preserved in Spanish. The promise of the Arab and Islamic cultural heritage and highlight its impact and significance in the history of human knowledge.”

“As a historian and writer, His Highness has a deep understanding and great appreciation of the value of these manuscripts to Arab culture,” he added.

Al Amiri continued: “This initiative reinforces Sharjah’s status as the world’s book capital and a beacon of Arabic and Islamic culture, and further cements its leading role in launching initiatives to preserve rare content in historic libraries, in line with Sharjah’s Consistent with long-term efforts to preserve historical libraries, the cultural and historical heritage of various countries.

“His Highness’s initiative sends an important message to all of us and to all cultural institutions in the world. It underscores that future aspirations and comprehensive development strategies cannot be realized without protecting and preserving the roots of authentic culture and its achievements.”
