It was announced on Thursday that Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been appointed vice-chairman of the Education and Human Resources Committee.

The appointment was announced in a decision issued by the UAE Cabinet, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Sheikha Mariam serves as President of the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation (SHF); Principal Advisor to the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholars Program at NYU Abu Dhabi; and Honorary President of Special Olympics UAE.

She oversees and manages the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai and, since 2011, chairs the UAE National Day Celebration Executive Committee.

In 2017, she received the UAE Pride Award in recognition of her national, humanitarian and academic endeavors.

In 2018, she played a key role in the establishment of the Founder’s Memorial and actively contributed to various activities commemorating the Year of Zayed. In addition, in 2021, she also served as the vice-chairman of the UAE Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee.

Sheikha Mariam’s efforts have contributed to the restoration and revitalization of the Al Hosn Cultural District, as well as the development of dynamic programs and events related to the Al Hosn Festival, an annual celebration of Abu Dhabi’s heritage.

What does the council do?

In June 2022, the UAE Cabinet approved the establishment of the Education and Human Resources Committee chaired by Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The main functions of the committee revolve around formulating an educational vision at the national level, approving educational goals and targets for all levels of education, and approving the general framework, policies, strategies, legislation and education system for all stages of education.

The mandate of the Education and Human Resources Committee extends to monitoring the performance of the education sector and ensuring that its output is aligned with current and future labor market needs.

It involves recommending programs aimed at developing a skilled workforce capable of adapting to future employment trends. In addition, the committee aims to enhance coordination among education authorities, federal and local employers, and the domestic private sector.
