Coinciding with the recently concluded United Nations Climate Change Conference (Cop27), the third school conference, Scope, was recently held at two schools in Dubai.

GEMS Legacy School and GEMS World Academy host the first ever forum for student voice and action on climate change.

Launched in 2020, Scope this year held online and offline events for around 380 students from 22 schools in the UAE and abroad.

Scope provides a collaborative space for students of all ages to learn from each other as they exchange ideas and opinions, and aims to challenge young people to find solutions related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

This year’s event engaged students in a wide range of inclusive and collaborative activities, from sustainable eating and fashion, design and innovation, to climate change research, speech writing and publishing, storytelling and more.

Hana Mohamed Suneer, GEMS Global Student Ambassador and sixth grade student at GEMS Legacy School, said of the project: “This is an opportunity, an impact, a tribute, a journey, a purpose. A forum for exchanging problems and solutions. Mitigation A platform for climate change. An opportunity to have a positive impact on people and nature. For me, Scope 2022 is not just an exhibition, it is a revolution.”

Climate change and sustainability are the main focus – central issues that must be addressed in the modern era to address and ultimately Sustaining the lives of future generations. Scope provides opportunities for young people to showcase their creativity, innovation and passion for sustainability. I have gained a lot of knowledge, skills and motivation to learn because of my incredible experience at Scope.”

Sahila Yaqoob, a Grade 8 student who participated remotely from DPS Budgam School in India, said: “Change your behavior or nature will force you to change. When millions of people multiply Small deeds can change the world. Scope 2022 is a great platform to showcase our talents and spread awareness on how to save Mother Earth. We are happy to be part of Scope 2022 and take steps towards sharing ideas for a sustainable future.”

Asha Alexander, Executive Director, Climate Change, GEMS Education and Principal, GEMS Legacy School, said: “As Cop27 draws to a close, GEMS Education has lifted the curtain on how education and youth can help change the narrative of effective climate action. Scope and the GEMS Global Ambassador Program aim to bring Schoolchildren gather to discuss and debate climate action. They are a springboard for young people to take action on urgent and massive challenges facing the planet.
