UAE students build device to cut carbon waste in cars, turn soot into usable material

Rasheeda Bundankhan, head of digital at GEMS Our Own English High School – Sharjah, said the name Crucible comes from the crucible furnace, a simple and centuries-old melting device commonly used in foundries. GEMS students have implemented the use of their applications in projects.

“The Crucible started as a humble idea at the end of a classroom brainstorming session, scribbled graffitily on a napkin, and it bore fruit in the Expo Young Innovators Challenge,” she said.

Student Harshit Saini said they started working on the project when we were in Year 9. His classmate Ashmit Khanna said they felt obligated to act in the face of increasing pollution.

“For the first time in more than 800,000 years, CO2 [carbon dioxide] The concentration not only exceeds 300ppm [parts per million], but now well over 400 ppm. As the next generation, we have a responsibility to act. The population of our world is increasing, and this growth shows no signs of stopping. This poses a threat to available resources and sustainable manufacturing. This is a key factor in motivating our team to pursue this project and inspire positive change for the benefit of the planet we all call home,” Ashmet added.

Saini said: “One of the main causes of climate change is the increase in carbon dioxide emissions and their by-products. Soot, also known as black carbon, is the most solar-absorbing component of particulate matter, absorbing a million times more energy than carbon dioxide. “If we can solve the carbon problem, the effects of global warming could be reversed. We can be freed from the adversity associated with a deteriorating world. That’s why we chose carbon as our theme.”

Project teammate Aubin Philips said: “We all love watching science documentaries, discoveries and innovations. This drives us in the direction of being problem solvers. “Creating this project was difficult” is an understatement, in part because it’s ours The first project. We read a lot of research papers, looked for solutions at every possible time interval, and stayed up all night. Our teachers also helped us understand the concepts we wanted to use on a deeper and more advanced level , they criticized our solutions to certain problems. This helps us develop the best solutions.”
