New My Online Schooling survey shows 89% of parents want to see changes in the education system

To better fit the future and prepare for the next workforce, 89% of parents agree that current curriculum, systems and classrooms need to change. That’s according to a new survey by My Online Schooling, a Cambridge International supported school.
My Online Schooling, one of the first UK online education schools in the region, conducted the first edition of its research survey, surveying 500 parents in the UAE to understand the changing needs of parents and trends in the education industry.
Key themes of the survey include reforming classrooms and programs to focus more on mental health, blended learning, extracurricular activities and high tuition costs.
Shift the focus of classes and courses
When asked what changes parents would like to see in the classroom and curriculum, 56% said they would like more focus on mental health and wellbeing, followed by a renewed focus on developing soft skills like empathy and confidence, 50% of parents The poll indicated that 49% of parents want more focus on STEM subjects.
These needs of parents are in line with new education goals and changes announced by the UAE government in May to prioritize mental health and continue to focus on teaching STEM subjects to prepare the workforce of the future.

While most schools in the country have returned to traditional face-to-face learning, the findings suggest that parents remain enthusiastic about the blended learning model and the flexibility it offers. The survey also found that 40 percent of parents want more attention to blended education models, which allow parents flexibility with their and their children’s schedules. In addition to flexibility, extracurricular activities are important to parents, with 37% wanting to focus more on sports and the performing arts.

Not surprisingly, the rising cost of living has also affected the education sector and, in turn, parents. The high cost of education remains a concern for parents despite the Dubai government freezing tuition fees for private schools for three years in a row. A survey by My Online Schooling revealed 87 per cent of parents are concerned that rising tuition fees will mean their children may not be able to receive a quality education in the future. In fact, more than half (52%) of the parents surveyed said tuition fees were the biggest factor influencing their school choice. According to parents, other important factors influencing the decision included the school’s proximity to home (42%), the school’s performance in STEM subjects (38%), the extracurricular activities offered (29%) and KHDA ratings (29%).
