The Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre (Tadweer) announced that in the first half of 2022 it had processed more than 1,860,000 tonnes of waste, including 88,382 tonnes of medical and hazardous waste, and handled 50,000 pest control requests. The center’s achievements in the first half of 2022 include signing a contract to operate a pest control service and reducing vector pests. In addition to the adoption of the No Objection Certificate (NOC) electronic approval system in Abu Dhabi and the organization of awareness campaigns throughout the emirate.

Waste Treatment Tadweer is dedicated to the treatment and recycling of all types of waste, with medical and hazardous waste being one of the most important types of waste handled by the center using the best standards and practices available in the field. This is done through its three centres in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, which collect, transport and process all medical waste generated by hospitals, clinics, healthcare centres, pharmacies, educational institutions and more. The waste is incinerated at temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Celsius while adhering to the best environmental and health practices in the UAE.

Tadweer recycled around 29,000 tonnes of agricultural and animal waste in the first half of 2022, in line with the UAE’s vision to achieve environmental targets related to proper waste management, recycling and diversion of waste from landfills. This contributed to the production of around 13,000 tonnes of organic fertilizer, in addition to the production of around 1,200,000 tonnes of recycled gravel from demolition and construction waste in Abu Dhabi over the same period.

The total amount of recyclable waste collected from recycling centres in the first half of this year was 39 tonnes. 67% of this is made from paper and cardboard materials, in addition to plastics, wood, clothing, expired medicines, used batteries, metal, aluminum cans, glassware, and more.

Pest Control In terms of pest control, vector pest infestation rates fell to 1.9%, well below the minimum acceptable rate of 5%. As the number of smart mosquito traps across the emirate increased to 640, the mosquito infestation rate dropped to 1.4%. The center also received 50,000 requests for control of vector pests, nuisance pests and stray animals, all of which were handled in accordance with the highest international standards and global practices.

Monitoring the Waste Sector The Centre has identified approximately 1,095 cases of indiscriminate dumping of solid waste and 5,248 cases of sewage dumping in Abu Dhabi.

Public Awareness Tadweer has organized around 21 awareness campaigns in Abu Dhabi, including field visits to various educational and government agencies, benefiting over 14,000 people in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. This is in direct line with Tadweer’s commitment to increasing environmental awareness of the importance of proper waste handling and disposal and protecting the environment.
