Inspired by the UAE’s declaration of 2023 as the “Year of Sustainability”, the Almoe Group of Companies and Brother Middle East & Africa joined forces with GEMS Education and Tadweer Waste Management to organize a tree planting event calling on students to become key stakeholders in environmental protection.

More than 400 students from GEMS Education gathered at Tadweer Waste Management’s Warsan unit and planted trees, an impact-driven initiative that contributed to the UAE’s goal of declaring 2023 as the Year of Sustainable Development.

“Together with our partners, we have planted approximately 500 trees using biodegradable pots. The tree planting campaign is based on two priorities: achieving positive environmental outcomes through ecological conservation and carbon sequestration; development efforts and in doing so position them as key stakeholders in the UAE Green Agenda 2030 and national-level targets such as net zero emissions by 2050,” explained Siddharth Sai G, Marketing Manager, Almoe Group.

Collaboration between organizations from different sectors complements the need for multi-stakeholder engagement to achieve ambitious climate action and sustainability goals. The onus for such cross-sector collaboration lies with consortiums with extensive value chain networks and long-standing reputations. To this end, the initiative of the Almoe Group and Brother MEA, with the support of GEMS Education and Tadweer, is both timely and significant.

Kennosuke Hirano, Managing Director of Brother, said: “As part of Brother’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and our commitment to protect the environment and reduce our environmental impact in all areas of our business, we are actively engaging in simple but meaningful initiatives. Very It is an honor to work with our business partners in the UAE, Almoe Digital Solutions and GEMS Education and Tadweer Management, to realize this shared vision and contribute to a greener environment in Dubai and more importantly, a sustainable and better future make a contribution.”

In the United Arab Emirates, which is 80 percent desert, reforestation has a significant ecological impact. Given the 2050 net-zero emissions target, trees can contribute by sequestering carbon from the atmosphere (according to the FAO, a mature tree can absorb 22kg of CO2). Likewise, an acre of trees provides enough oxygen for 18 people per day (USDA). The life cycle value of trees also includes conservation and restoration of ecology by providing habitat for various species and creating symbiotic environments. Trees play a key role in reducing soil erosion and recharging aquifers, alleviating the water scarcity that continues to plague the UAE.

Jamal Sarwar Sabri, CEO of Almoe Group, said sustainability efforts must have a sense of urgency as climate change nears tipping point. Therefore, Jamal said, corporate strategies must fundamentally consider ESG, sustainability and climate action. “Businesses must align with larger national-level goals and initiatives. The UAE leadership has a roadmap for harmonizing long-term socioeconomic growth and sustainability. Such an ambitious vision requires greater engagement from the public and private sectors. Here The other key stakeholders are the students, who can be the torchbearers of sustainability. Almoe aims to increase their participation,” concludes Jamal.
