Coffee consumption in the UAE is growing as tea-drinking Asian nationals increasingly turn to coffee.

Among the many ethnic groups that call the UAE home, coffee consumption is quite high among Westerners and Arabs, especially Gulf Arabs. On the other hand, Westerners and Arabs in the UAE are increasing their tea consumption.

Mike Butler, chief executive of UAE-based coffee and tea house Kava & Chai, said a survey by the company found that people from traditional tea-drinking countries were increasing their coffee intake.

“In this part of the world, per capita coffee consumption is very high, especially among Westerners and Arabs – especially Gulf Arabs. Even if we look at some of the other demographics, many Indians are switching from tea to coffee. Traditionally, India is a very tea-based drinking country, but is moving away from tea to coffee,” Butler said.

The tea and coffee company has branches in Dubai and Sharjah and plans to expand into Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia next year.

The UAE is one of the most developed coffee markets in the region due to the establishment of a coffee hub in Dubai’s multi-commodity hub.

Indians are switching from tea to coffee because it’s just a matter of exposure to different beverages, Butler said.

“For example, we found that Westerners and Arabs were trying to drink tea. We found that Asians were experimenting with coffee more, especially in the UAE, we have a cultural melting pot where people want to try new things,” said Kava and Chai Chief Executive Officer The executive added that his name is Arabic for coffee and tea.

On average, residents drink two to three cups of coffee a day, but some drink four to five cups of special and highly refined coffees a day, Butler added.

“There’s a lot of cheap coffee with twice as much caffeine. But if you’re drinking very fancy coffee, you can drink more,” he said.
