The UAE authorities announced that they will conduct a nuclear emergency exercise at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
At a media briefing on Monday, officials stated that the main events and scenarios of Convex-3’BarakaUAE’ will begin at 7 am on October 26.
The most complex nuclear emergency exercise of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a 36-hour exercise designed to test the country’s nuclear emergency preparedness and response capabilities.
The exercise is conducted every three to five years to test response capabilities and early notification protocols in severe nuclear or radiological emergencies in accordance with the International Emergency Response Convention.
The exercise will need to activate the response systems of various entities, as well as their measures and plans to protect the public and the environment.
The nuclear emergency exercise will be conducted under the supervision of the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Agency (NCEMA) and in accordance with the regulatory framework of the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Agency (FANR).
Dr. Thaer Al Ameri, NCEMA’s Director of Response, said: “This exercise aims to highlight any potential areas for improvement in plant safety management and to ensure compliance with international standards.
“This exercise aims to demonstrate our ability to deal with nuclear or radiological emergencies. We believe this exercise will be a success and will further strengthen our capabilities.”
FANR Radiation Safety Director Aayda Al Shehhi said that the exercise will involve more than 70 experts from different countries and 12 international organizations, and they will support the country’s efforts to ensure safety to the public.
“Since its establishment, FANR has issued a number of laws to regulate the country’s nuclear business to ensure people’s safety and protect the environment,” she said.
According to the authorities, the exercise will not affect the operation of the power plant and residents will not experience power outages.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Convex-3 aims to evaluate and improve its own and its member states’ response arrangements and capabilities in nuclear and radiological emergencies.
Convex exercises are prepared in three levels of complexity. The Convex-1 exercise is designed to test emergency communication links to contact points (such as telephones, e-mails, and other electronic systems).
700 people from the Al Dhafra area and local organizations will participate in the exercise.
The Barakah Power Plant, the first power plant in the Arab countries, was launched in August last year when the UAE authorities pressed the button of the first of the four reactors.
The second unit of the country’s nuclear power plant is Successfully integrated into the National Grid September 2021.
The power plant is located in the Al Dhafra area of ​​Abu Dhabi and construction began in 2012.

According to the authorities, Units 3 and 4 are in the final stage of commissioning, with 95% and 91% completed respectively.
When fully operational, Barakah’s four reactors will generate 5,600 megawatts of electricity, accounting for approximately 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs.
