UAE to set up first eye and tissue bank in Abu Dhabi – News

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Health (DoH) and US-based Eversight, one of the world’s leading not-for-profit eye banks, have reaffirmed the UAE’s position as a leading destination for comprehensive healthcare, partnering to establish the UAE’s first Eye and organization bank.

The agreement will see the creation, development and operation of a comprehensive seamless eye transplant framework in the UAE. DoH and Eversight will set the building blocks in three phases, including project design, implementation and management.

At an early stage, the two entities will focus on implementing the necessary arrangements for the Ophthalmic and Tissue Bank (Abu Dhabi) as an importer of corneas and other ophthalmology-related tissues in the region. In addition to integrating the Eye and Tissue Banking program into the UAE’s national organ donation and transplantation programme. For its part, Eversight will develop a comprehensive medical framework to standardize and operate procedures across all clinical functions within the Abu Dhabi Eye and Tissue Bank, based on international best practice in Abu Dhabi.

In the presence of DoH Chairman Abdulla bin Mohamed Al Hamed and Eversight Director of Global Development Carrie Wolverton, the partnership was manifested through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by DoH and Undersecretary Global Development Dr. Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi, Director of Eversight Development.

Dr. Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DoH), said: “Under the direction of our wise leadership, Abu Dhabi continues to work with leading international institutions to enhance its national healthcare operations in all aspects. “Through this partnership, we aim to further improve healthcare outcomes and provide a fast and seamless procedure for all patients in the UAE who need eye tissue transplants.”

Al Kaabi added: “We encourage all community members to register their consent to donate postmortem organs and tissues. As we work endlessly to reaffirm Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading destination for healthcare, we empower our community through noble and emotional actions Be a part of the journey of excellence.”

The International Conference on Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Initiative in Abu Dhabi last week witnessed the launch of a community movement in Abu Dhabi in support of Chairman Abdullah bin Mohammad Al Hamid’s National Organ Donation and Transplantation Program” Hayat” Ministry of Health – Abu Dhabi.

Al Hamed is the first person to register as an organ and tissue donor in the event, which aims to encourage members of society to register as organ and tissue donors to contribute to improving the quality of life of patients with organ failure.

The conference aims to shed light on global experience and best practice related to the scientific, philanthropic, social and legal aspects of organ donation, while raising community awareness about healthy living and disease prevention.
