They will start the academic year at the University in October 2023
Two UAE students, Sara Fekri and Gustė Gurčinaitė, have been awarded Rhodes Scholarships to study at Oxford University.
The duo, selected for their exceptional intellect, character and leadership qualities, joined more than 60 students in applying for the scholarship earlier this year when applications opened in June 2022.
Sara Fekri is an Emirati student at King’s College London, studying a BSc (Honours) in Physics. Her aim is to study for an MSc in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Oxford University.
Gustė Gurčinaitė is a Lithuanian student at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), working on a BA in Political Science. Gurcinaite aims to study an MSc in Environmental Change and Management at Oxford University.
The pair will start their academic year at the university in October 2023.
In 2021, UAE student Rashid Alrafie and NYU student Uljad Berdica were selected as 2022 UAE Rhodes Scholars.
A total of 18 Emirati students have been awarded the scholarship since 2014.
The UAE Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee is chaired by Omar Saif Ghobash, Assistant Minister for Cultural Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Deputy Chairpersons Shamma Bint Suhail Faris Al Mazrui and Minister of State for Youth Dr Robert Buckley. The committee met the finalists in person for the first time since the pandemic and interviewed nine finalists in Abu Dhabi.
“When I was eight, my mum told me that my dad wanted me to go to one of the top educational institutions in the world. From then until I was 17, I was only focused on getting places at a top university. I went to Oxford and met to the Rhodes Scholars. I remember wishing I could apply for the scholarship as an Emiratis. I am proud that the UAE offers this opportunity to eligible students from the country,” said Omar Saif Ghobash.
