UAE, UK sign MoU on energy, climate change

The UAE and the UK signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on January 13 to exchange information and knowledge to advance the energy sector and sustainable development, state-run WAM news agency reported.

Official sources said the MoU aims to “strengthen strategic and technical cooperation in the energy sector to develop renewable energy technologies, including regulatory frameworks and incentives”.

The signing was attended by Suhail bin Mohamed al-Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Grant Shapps, UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and other officials from both countries.

The UAE minister explained that the memorandum of understanding is “important in light of the mutual interests of the two countries, as it helps them implement energy policies that provide low-carbon, secure and sustainable energy supplies at affordable prices.”

He emphasized that both countries understand the importance of improving energy efficiency, decarbonizing its components and developing renewable energy technologies to help the world achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Mazrouei also highlighted the key role of the UAE and the UK in laying the groundwork for climate action as the UAE prepares to host the COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

On January 12, the UAE appointed Sultan al-Jaber, Minister of Industry and Technology and CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), as COP28 chairman.

The agreement between Abu Dhabi and London came on the same day that UAE renewable energy provider Masdar announced that it had signed a similar memorandum of understanding with four Dutch companies to investigate the possibility of exporting green hydrogen from Abu Dhabi to Europe.arrive Reuters.

Masdar has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Port of Amsterdam, SkyNRG, Evos Amsterdam and Zenith Energy to collaborate in creating a green hydrogen supply chain supporting the Dutch and European markets. The supply chain will center around production in Abu Dhabi and export to the Netherlands via the Port of Amsterdam.

The UAE has become a key partner for Western countries since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and its pursuit of energy deals to replace sanctions-hit imports of Russian liquefied natural gas.

Following discussions between UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MbZ) and French President Macron, France Signed a strategic cooperation agreement in the energy field with the UAE on July 18, 2022.
