UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed reviewed the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict in a phone call with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Quleiba.

The foreign ministers discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them, as well as other issues of mutual concern, Emirates News Agency WAM reported on Friday.

During the conference call, the UAE minister praised the UN-backed agreement between Ukraine, Russia and Turkey that allows the resumption of grain exports from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.

July 22, Ukraine and Russia Landmark agreement signed Working with Turkey and the United Nations, it aims to alleviate the global food crisis caused by the disruption of grain shipments from the Black Sea.

Ukraine’s infrastructure ministry said Saturday that 16 vessels carrying 450,000 tonnes of agricultural products have left Ukrainian seaports since early August under an agreement to ensure the safe passage of ships.

As part of the UN agreement, all ships are inspected in Istanbul by a joint coordination centre working with Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish and UN personnel.

Their main tasks include monitoring the safe passage of Ukrainian grain ships along their established routes and overseeing their inspections for prohibited weapons on their way in and out of the Black Sea.

Blocked deliveries to the world’s two largest food exporters have sent prices soaring, making food imports prohibitively expensive for some of the world’s poorest countries.

In addition, bin Zayed also reiterated that the UAE is “fully ready to support all efforts to peacefully resolve the conflict in Ukraine and reach a political solution to the crisis”.

“Thanks to the UAE for supporting Ukraine and providing humanitarian assistance within the United Nations. It is recommended that the UAE side actively participate in Ukraine’s rapid recovery plan,” Kuleba was quoted as saying in a statement from Ukraine’s foreign ministry.

In July, the UAE sent a plane carrying 52 metric tons of food to Bulgaria to support Ukrainian refugees.

The aid is part of the UAE’s ongoing relief efforts to alleviate the humanitarian impact Ukrainian refugees are facing in the war-torn country’s neighbours.

Last month, the UAE delivered 27 tonnes of food and medical supplies to Ukrainian refugees in Poland.

The aid is part of the country’s commitment to donate AED 18.3 million (US$ 5 million) in response to the UN humanitarian emergency appeal.
