Within a month, Dubai will be home to the world’s largest gem-quality ruby ever discovered.
The stunning 101-carat Mozambique gem was unveiled by Fura Gems Inc on Wednesday at the Dubai Diamond Bourse at the DMCC.
The rare pigeon’s blood red rough, named Estrela de Fura (Star of Fura in Portuguese), will remain in the emirate until a private auction in October. Not everyone will be able to see it, though, as viewings will be strictly by appointment.
“We are very pleased to have discovered Estrela de Fura, the largest gem-quality ruby ever mined in the world. After more than two years of production, Fura has proven that its ruby mine in Mozambique is a world-class deposit,” said Fura Gems founder and CEO Dev Shetty said.
“This discovery is unprecedented and a moment of honor for us in Fura and Mozambique.”
Rubies of this quality – with their vivid red hue and unique fluorescence and clarity – are said to be extremely rare.
The finest rubies have been synonymous with Mogok in Myanmar for centuries, but the discovery of Estrela de Fura has put Mozambique in the spotlight as the source of rare gem-quality crystals.
A gem that could set a world record
One expert described the ruby as “the most important and most promising gemstone” he had tested in his career.
Dr. A. Peretti, owner and CEO of GRS GemResearch Swisslab, said: “This ruby shows characteristics that are usually only encountered in the classic Mogok mine in Myanmar. It has fluorescence and a vivid red color and even has excellent Cleaness.”
“Estrela de Fura is poised to set a new world record for the best gem-quality ruby over 50 carats ever discovered,” he added.
Shetty said they chose to unveil the rare gem in Dubai because it is their “birthplace”.
“We born Fura in Dubai, DMCC, it had to start here. We are based here. It is iconic not only for us, but for the community in Mozambique, DMCC, Dubai and my hometown in Mozambique One day we operate,” he added.
Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and CEO of DMCC, added: “DMCC has played an important role in cementing the UAE’s position as a global trading hub, especially in gemstones. We are proud to partner with Fura to launch the world largest gem-quality ruby in the world; yet another demonstration of Dubai’s pivotal role in the global gem industry.”
