Al Ain: The Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at the United Arab Emirates University, in partnership with the Office of the Vice-Provost for Research at the Abu Dhabi Center for Waste Management (Tadweer), has launched an awareness campaign called Food Waste Audit and several local institutions.
The event kicked off at the University Students Food Court in the presence of Professor Ahmed Murad, Associate Provost for Research, Dr Mohammed Abdul Muhsen Al-Yafei, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, and several University staff and students.
Dr Nuha Mustafa, a professor at the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine who oversaw the campaign’s programme, said the campaign was based on research to limit waste and food consumption. The awareness program targets schools and colleges to educate students on the need to reduce food waste. Research carried out in food courts has shown that more than 50kg of different food items are wasted each day during breakfast and lunch, which contributes to the wastage of these foods and drinks as students clearly buy more food than they need and consume.
She added that the campaign aims to create a sustainable campus environment and identify and recycle waste in sustainable environment projects and transform the university campus into an environment-friendly campus. In addition, according to the development of society and changes in eating habits, student research competitions and projects on this issue will be carried out, requiring awareness and a new culture.
