Abu Dhabi-based German Gulf Engineering Consultants (GGEC) has joined hands with UAE of UAE nationals audit training programs and internships.
A campaign to promote the use of refillable water bottles will also be launched as part of Voices for Energy 2023 to instil sustainable responsibility in young people for a carbon-neutral future.
Under the initiative, students at five universities in Abu Dhabi will receive refillable water bottles in support of the UAE government’s efforts to ban single-use plastics.
Of the programme, Dr Saud Muhammad AlMarzooqi, Acting Associate Professor of Student Affairs at UAE University, said: “Winning the bid to host COP28, the global climate summit in 2023, adds another positive angle to the strategic objectives of the internship and energy training program for UAE nationals. The program is well suited for Emirati youth to engage with climate change, energy conservation measures and focus on renewable energy.”
Under the scheme, 50 selected Emirati students from five universities will be provided with paid internships and training in energy management and auditing. Upon completion of the program, students are awarded certificates of achievement at a grand awards ceremony. “
GGEC’s corporate social responsibility initiative – Voices of Energy 2023 – also fits in the context of the next UN Climate Change Conference in 2023 (COP28), which will be hosted by the UAE at Dubai Expo City. Energy Voices 2023 is also supported by Abu Dhabi University, Zayed University, Adnoc and key private partners.
Sunilan Menothuparambil, Managing Director of GGEC, said: “All participants of the training, our partners and those associated with Energy Voices will commit to using refillable water bottles and ending the use of single-use plastics.” Reusable water bottles have been procured and will be distributed to all stakeholders in training and climate change awareness campaigns.
“Our plan will also include ten actions to promote energy efficiency across themes such as – save energy at home, walk, cycle or use public transport, eat more vegetables, control the urge to travel, stop food waste, reduce, reuse, Repair and recycle, switch from conventional energy to renewable energy, support environmentally friendly products, use electricity and promote earth friendliness,” he said.
It will also contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 – good health and well-being – and in its own way contribute to the UAE’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. He added.
“This is possibly the first time in the UAE that a comprehensive climate change and energy management program and internship is offered. Energy Voice 2023 is also unique, with national entities joining forces with the private sector to advance the cause of sustainable development. This demonstrates wider adoption of the UAE’s net zero strategy promise
and how keen private sector players are to advance the cause,” Menothuparambil noted.
The focus of the training will include effective energy audits, energy management practices in the real estate industry, energy efficiency in buildings, energy efficiency tools and techniques, and efficient operations and management.
In addition to current students, all nationals and expatriates can also enroll in the program.
