UAE University’s new scientific achievements at international level

[ad_1]

Al Ain: Among academic findings at the international level, a team of researchers from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, UAE University, in collaboration with several Russian researchers and international centres, has succeeded in discovering an unknown type of crustacean “Diplostraca” microorganism It is one of the common species in the Arabian Peninsula animal kingdom. The study, published in the world’s most prestigious scientific journal, was led by Prof. Waleed Hamza, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, United Arab Emirates University, in collaboration with Prof. Alex Kotov and researcher Anna Nertina, Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Russia, Dr. Khaled Amiri – Director of the Khalifa Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, a researcher at the Papanin Institute of Biology of Inland Waters of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a master student in biology from the Russian Academy of Sciences and Ms. Shamm Al Neyadi, who spent 21 years at the Russian Institute Day, using a state-of-the-art camera Lucida perfects her paintings.

Professor Waleed Hamza (Principal Investigator), from the Department of Biology, UAE University, said: “I believe that the discovery of new species that grow in temporary freshwater bodies will open doors for many researchers to explore different environments, not only in the United Arab Emirates, but also in Arabian Peninsula. There are still many discoveries in this region, in fact, expanding our research field and collaborating with world-class institutions will actively improve our research capabilities, especially when young researchers from the UAE are involved, which will lead to building the ability to explore national capacity of its land resources.”

He added: “The importance of this scientific discovery lies in increasing the biodiversity of living things, especially in the United Arab Emirates. This adds to the value of protecting wetland ecosystems as an important resource for protecting the planet’s environment and living things.”

Researchers have discovered a new microbe in the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. The discovery could help resolve some of the questions related to the history of these daphnia in the northern hemisphere and track the spread of these microbes in North Africa and the Middle East. The team studied the distribution patterns of biodiversity and its formation history in continental waters. Most scientific publications on this genus are related to this subgenus, without similar studies on microorganisms living mainly in temporary water bodies.

Prof. Waleed Hamza noted, “We successfully identified the creature, identified it as a new species, and named it “Daphnia arabica sp. nov,” referring to its presence in the Arabian Peninsula,” And to distinguish it from other species belonging to another group, which mainly live in temporary freshwater bodies. The researchers collected samples of the dry sediment core behind the Shuwaib Dam (Al Ain City) in March 2018. The sediment was immersed in drinking water for three weeks, the sediment-encased eggs hatched, and the decomposed organisms were isolated and grown in the Marine Biology Laboratory at the Faculty of Science, United Arab Emirates University, at the Khalifa Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and With the help of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, the isolated organisms have undergone in-depth micro-morphological, molecular (DNA) and further genomic and morphological analyses using a modern “camera lucida”.
