Technological advances have replaced some manual jobs, but some of the top jobs that can keep today’s students relevant in the future will require STEM research.

Some of these in-demand jobs could be green engineers, drone technicians, information security analysts, software developers, data scientists, operations research analysts, statisticians, and roles in the supply chain industry, among others.

University professors and advisers in the UAE believe this will be the future.

They say work that incorporates the country’s vision for the next 50 years and the values of “determination, creativity and skills”, focusing on education, trade, production and culture, will be seen as the most marketable skills.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupations and wages in STEM and STEM-related fields are expected to increase over the next few years.

Many employers struggle to fill these high-paying jobs “in part because of low understanding and proficiency in STEM”.

Chayanka Mohan, Senior Education Consultant at Hale Education Group, said: “Some of the hot jobs that pay well include ‘Data Scientist, Network Architect, Software/Web Developer, Aerospace Engineer, Biomedical Engineer and Information Security Analyst. Unique to STEM It’s about being able to experiment and develop new innovations that improve creativity, teamwork and problem-solving.”

“Furthermore, because this format of education offers a nuanced syllabus and qualifications, the chances of international student immigration who choose to pursue STEM education in the U.S. and Canada have increased,” Mohan added.

Universities in the UAE have incorporated these courses into their curriculum as part of their future strategies.

BITS Pilani Dubai Campus plans to introduce a Master of Civil Engineering with a specialisation in Infrastructure Engineering and Management, with a minor in Cyber Security, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Supply Chain.

Some of their new partners include companies from the UAE and India such as ADNOC, Emirates Group, KSB Middle East FZE, Voltas, Axiom and many more.

Amsal Muneeb, Employment Department, BITS Pilani Dubai Campus, said: “Considering the UAE job market, the top jobs in this field will be software engineer, data scientist, cybersecurity architect, cloud engineer, artificial intelligence engineer, full stack developer, production Engineers, Automation Engineers, Process Engineers, Project Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Biomedical Engineers, Environmental Engineers, etc.”

Experts emphasise that schools and universities have begun to focus on developing a range of technical, creative and entrepreneurial skills with students to prepare them for a future world that is changing exponentially.

Mick Gernon, Managing Director, Middle East – International School Partnership (ISP) said: “Understanding, not just using technology, is a prerequisite for creating new solutions to global challenges and knowledge-based outcomes. The industry is changing rapidly and requires the focus of green engineers for sustainable solutions.”

He added: “For the UAE, this can include new jobs in sustainable agriculture, energy and space technology solutions. With the advent of autonomous vehicles, we will need skilled technicians to build and test, as well as no Human and machine technicians to transform delivery service and safety.”

“These are the jobs of the future,” experts say, but they will require students to understand and embrace advances in AI and STEM in a broader context.

Gernon added: “STEM-based education needs to be adaptable, able to adapt flexibly to technological advances, and needs to be at the heart of learning in and out of school. Only then can we keep up with exponential technology and how it is changing our lives and The power of the way you work.”
