The popular messaging app WhatsApp has ceased functioning in many countries, including the UAE, the US, the UK and some European countries.

Hundreds of users complained about the failure on Twitter. Downdetector.ae, a website that tracks outages, reported that hundreds of people in the UAE also reported outages.

More than 70% of complaints in the UAE are related to server connections, the website says. A graph also shows the timing of the complaints, starting around 10pm today.

The Spanish-language tweet said that the WhatsApp network stopped working in several US countries for more than an hour.

Users from Mexico, Brazil and Spain complained that the Messages app displayed error messages when they tried to open it on their computers. A DNS propagation checker showed that the app was down in various states in the US and European countries, including Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands.
