Abu Dhabi/Khartoum, 6th May: WHO has informed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have completed the first tranche of medical assistance to Sudan.
“The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the World Health Organization delivered 30 tons of emergency medical supplies to Sudan today. A plane carrying supplies for treatment of injuries, emergency surgery and essential medicines arrived at Port Sudan airport early this morning,” WHO said in a statement. said in a statement Friday.
The shipment, worth $444,000, included enough medical supplies and essential medicines for 165,000 people, according to the release.
“This shipment” is the first that WHO has been able to deliver by air to Sudan since the conflict began,” WHO said.
On April 15, fierce clashes broke out between Sudan’s regular armed forces and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary groups, with the epicenter in Khartoum. Government forces accused the RSF of mutiny and launched airstrikes on their bases. Sudanese military chief Abdel Fattah Burhan issued a decree disbanding the Rapid Support Forces. Since then, the parties have imposed several temporary ceasefires across the country, but the conflict has yet to be resolved.
About 600 people have been killed in the clashes so far, according to the Sudanese Ministry of Health. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization reported more than 400 deaths and more than 4,000 injuries.
