Traditional methods of communication, such as sending letters and telegrams through the postal service, have dwindled over the years as the world rapidly went digital. The postal industry is grappling with its biggest challenge, digital disruption.

With this in mind, Rashid Huraiz Rashid Al Falasi, Acting Retail Officer at Emirates Post, the country’s official postal operator, explains the many benefits of the postal service that people seem to overlook.

Al Falasi said: “While most businesses communicate via email these days, important or sensitive correspondence from government agencies, banks, and even customers or suppliers are sent in paper copies. This necessitates having a post office box.”

He added: “It is still a fairly common practice in other countries to use their postal network to send packages and documents to the UAE. However, since there is no postal or postal code system in the country, businesses must have a United PO Box to receive any packages and avoid loss.”

A PO Box is something that many expats and even individuals often apply for, providing a safe and secure address for businesses.

“This allows start-ups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to have an official mailing address. It validates the existence of such companies by giving businesses a more professional outlook and enhancing their reputation.”

In addition, Al Falasi emphasized that “each P.O. Box subscription grants access to digital services, allowing them to control incoming shipments by setting preferences, receiving delivery notifications, requesting additional services, and more.”

“For businesses, PO Boxes provide an extra layer of security for confidential documents or sensitive mail such as contracts and checks. This is especially important when away from work for a period of time.”

P.O. Box Prices

P.O. Box prices vary depending on the type of service desired.

“PO Boxes provide an affordable, flexible and convenient solution with complete security and confidentiality when receiving packages or documents. Obtaining PO Boxes is an affordable and financially viable option for businesses , as the annual fee is small and packages can be customized accordingly. Companies can also manage and upgrade their PO boxes to include office delivery and bulk receivables for added convenience.”

Additionally, companies have 24/7 access to their post office boxes, so packages and mail can be collected when it is convenient for them.

“A formal business address consisting of a PO Box is therefore crucial as it builds trust and credibility, building a professional reputation for your business.”

Helps create consistent and reliable addresses for customers

“Another benefit of providing PO Boxes to businesses is that even if the location of the business changes, the PO Box number remains the same within the same emirate. Hence, it provides customers with a consistent and reliable address,” Al Falasi opined.

Business leaders in the UAE reiterated that this is a great way to increase business visibility, as PO Boxes can be searched online, providing business information and map locations.

Aws Ismail, director of Marc Ellis, asserts, “Any business in the UAE needs a post office box, primarily based on verification of the business, to provide additional assurance to anyone interacting with the business. It is part of the corporate identity of the business, which means that the business and its management have been validated.”

He added: “Finally, as a rule of thumb, it’s important to have a PO Box to avoid any important letters being sent elsewhere. This happened to me once because I didn’t provide a PO Box and sent one to be delivered. Different locations with similar names; it’s a hassle to find letters and reroute them to the correct address. So I highly recommend registering for a PO Box.”

Although private couriers such as DHL, UP, FedEx operate in the UAE, some expat families find it very helpful to have a PO Box.

Amla Mazumdar, a resident of Meadows in Dubai, said: “My husband and I both quit our jobs. We used to use our work PO Boxes. That’s when we realized we needed our PO Boxes now. We started our business and Finally felt the need for it. If you have a PO Box address, you can use it to send (snail) mail to the UAE. Although we are an offshore company, we went ahead and applied for one. About four to five years ago, I remember how easy it was to get a PO Box here. We got it within two to three business days.”

If a postcode is required, Dubai Central Post Office recommends postcode “00000”.
