An Arab woman has been convicted of finding and stealing a wallet containing Dh3,000 from a shopping mall, then refusing to return it to its owner when arrested.
The case came to light when the purse’s owner complained that she had lost it while walking around the mall. Surveillance video retrieved from the mall proved that the defendant had indeed stolen the wallet, but the defendant later denied that she had stolen it.
The plaintiff then filed a lawsuit against the Arab woman, seeking the return of Dh3,000. Case files show that the victim requested an additional payment of Dh47,000 to compensate for the damage she suffered.
The Al Ain Court of First Instance ruled that the defendant pay Dh5,000 to the plaintiff – Dh3,000 in money in the purse, and an additional Dh2,000 for moral damages.
