ABU DHABI, UAE – M42, the first technology-enabled integrated healthcare facility jointly created by G42 Healthcare and Mubadala Health, is conducting groundbreaking research on human and ocean health.
The study looked at blood and seawater samples retrieved after the recently concluded 2022 Golden Globe Expedition, where former Indian Navy officer Commander Abhilash Tomi (ret.) survived 236 days of grueling sea voyages , on the podium told about the nautical history in which he sailed around the world.
During a voyage aboard a UAE-registered BAYANAT vessel, Abhilash collected water samples from remote locations in four oceans (Indian Ocean, South Pacific, and North and South Atlantic Oceans) to help study the presence of microplastics.
The samples will be tested at Central Testing Labs, G42 Healthcare’s management facility in Abu Dhabi. Using G42 Healthcare’s unique medical and data-centric technologies, the results will improve understanding of the impact of human activities on the global marine environment, with the aim of working with relevant stakeholders to encourage more sustainable practices.
By computationally studying and testing more than 30 chemical indicators, G42 Healthcare researchers and environmental monitoring experts also aimed to understand the impact of long-distance voyages (including diet) and endurance on the captain’s health. Changes in blood chemistry will be monitored during and after the voyage for any long-term benefits or effects. Hopefully this information will benefit other sailors on long sea voyages who are sometimes limited in dietary variety.
Sustainability is high on the UAE’s agenda and COP28 will be hosted here later this year. Furthermore, the UAE’s long-standing relationship with the sea and seafarers, which continues to this day in terms of trade and recreation, holds a special place for the study of sailors and the welfare of the sea.
Hasan Jasem Al Nowais, Group CEO and Managing Director, M42, said: “At M42, we are excited to have an impact on the global healthcare industry, changing lives through innovation. Discover our environment as the ocean is the largest ecosystem and life support system of the planet.
“As we strive to envision a future in which we leverage not only the latest technologies to optimize patient outcomes, but also powerful knowledge sharing to empower the scientific and healthcare communities, we believe this research will Helps uncover insights and identify interventions powered by AI based analytics platform proving beneficial to our steps towards climate action. My heartiest congratulations to Cdr. Abhilash Tomy on overcoming enormous odds to support us Efforts to protect the planet.”
Delighted to be home after more than six months at sea, Abhilash added: “I am very grateful to Bayanat for sponsoring and supporting my passion and my dreams. After successfully completing the 2022 Golden Globes competition, I realized that giving back to the planet and science The opportunities are much greater than I initially envisioned. Having seen the impact our actions have on the ocean, I am proud to be part of this first effort to conduct water quality testing and sailor health research.”
First held in 1968, the 2022 edition of the Golden Globes sees 16 entrants attempt to circumnavigate the world non-stop — a total distance of 30,000 miles starting in September. The race is so tough that only two of the current 16 entrants have completed the race after seven months at sea, another may do so in the second week of May, and the others either found the conditions too difficult or suffered from excessive damage the ship.
