Britain’s Rishi Sunak will be in Egypt next week for COP27, he said on Wednesday, after his office said the new prime minister was expected to skip the annual climate summit.
“There is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change. There is no energy security without investment in renewable energy,” Sunak tweeted.
He added that he was attending the summit to “deliver on Glasgow’s legacy of building a safe and sustainable future”, referring to the UK city’s final meeting in 2021.
Sunak’s office said last week that he was not expected to attend a UN climate change meeting to criticize and support the decision because he was focused on “driving domestic commitments.”

Sunak, who became Britain’s third prime minister in two months last week, has been working with Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt on a package of tax hikes and spending cuts to repair the country’s public finances, due to start on November 11. Expires on the 17th.
Opposition Labour called Sunak’s decision to skip COP27 a “huge failure of the leadership”. The UK hosted COP26 last year and chairs it until the next summit.
Britain’s COP26 chairperson Alok Sharma, who lost his cabinet ministership after Sunak took office, told The Times over the weekend that Sunak’s absence from the summit could weaken the country’s position as a world leader on green issues.
