UK says Iran ‘spreading bloodshed’ from Middle East to Kyiv | World News

[ad_1]

Speaking to the Bahraini leader on Saturday, Britain’s foreign minister slammed Iran for “spreading bloodshed” and vowed to work with allies against Tehran.

Ukraine and its Western allies have accused Iran of supplying Russia with drones they say Moscow has used to carry out attacks in Ukraine in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, Tehran acknowledged sending the drones but insisted they were provided before the Russian invasion.

“The weapons supplied by Iran threaten the entire region,” British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley told the annual Manama Dialogue meeting in Bahrain.

“The regime has sold Russia armed drones that are killing Ukrainian civilians”.

The deft speech came a day after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, also in Bahrain, warned that Iran’s “proliferation of arms” posed a threat to Europe.

Criticism has grown as Iran grapples with its largest mass protests in years following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September. female.

“While their people are demonstrating against decades of oppression, Iran’s rulers are spreading bloodshed and destruction across the region and as far away as Kyiv,” Cleverly said.

“The UK is determined to work with our friends to confront the threat from Iran”.

On Monday, the European Union imposed sanctions on more than 30 senior Iranian officials and organizations over Tehran’s crackdown on protesters and the supply of drones to Russia.

In his speech, Cleverley also slammed Russian President Vladimir Putin for threatening global security.

“No country is immune to the turmoil he has brought to world markets or the damage he has done to global food security,” he said.

“Putin’s war is causing more suffering for Syrians and Yemenis already enduring poverty in a humanitarian emergency, while ordinary Lebanese are plunged into economic crisis.”
