UK unemployment eased in the three months to the end of April, official data showed on Tuesday, but wage growth continued to lag inflation.
The unemployment rate fell to 3.8% from 3.9% in the three months to the end of March, the ONS said in a statement.
“While the number of people who are neither in work nor looking for work has fallen again … the number of people who are out of the job market due to long-term illness continues to rise to a new record,” Darren Morgan, director-general of the Bureau of Economic Statistics, said in the UK National Statistics Bureau.
“In cash terms, base wages are now growing at the fastest rate on record, except for periods where the data has been distorted by the pandemic.
“However, even so, wage growth has lagged behind inflation,” he added.
For the first time, the number of workers at work surpassed pre-pandemic levels and hit a new high, Morgan said.
“The biggest driver of recent employment growth … has been health and social care, followed by hospitality,” he said.
