Ukraine latest: ’embarrassing’ Putin ‘may be ousted by ultranationalists’, analysts say | World News

[ad_1]

A Labour representative apparently failed to read the mood in some rooms at the party’s meeting today.

Angelo Sanchez, from the Labour Party in the Leicester constituency, criticized the Ukrainian government for its opposition to the left, and argued that supporting it in the war against Russia was “pro-imperialist” and “complicity in war crimes”.

The party is debating a motion that includes a call for Labour to continue to stand with NATO allies for military and other support for Ukraine.

On the prospect of the motion being approved, Mr Sanchez said: “This means that a future Labour government will send money to the Ukrainian government, which is suppressing the left in its home country, which criminalises socialist parties and jails Ukrainian activists.

“If you support this motion, Motion 13 on Ukraine, you are not supporting the Ukrainian people, you are just supporting the United States, you are supporting neoliberalism, you are supporting imperialism.”

His comments were booed by some, although a few praised the speaker.

Later, Labour’s shadow defence secretary, John Healey, said that under a Labour government, “the UK’s resolve to confront Russian aggression and support Ukraine will not change”.

“Those who call ‘stop the war’ louder than ‘win the war’ are playing Putin’s hands,” he said, to applause.
