Ukraine’s Zaporozhye nuclear power plant disconnected from grid: report | World News

[ad_1]

Ukraine’s Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was completely disconnected from the grid for the first time on Thursday, according to Ukraine’s nuclear power operator.

The nuclear power plant is controlled by the Russian military.

In a statement cited by CNN, Energoatom said the complex was disconnected on Thursday due to a fire in a nearby ash pit, causing the last remaining power line to Ukraine’s energy grid to be disconnected twice. .

“The intruder’s actions caused the ZNPP (Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant) to be completely disconnected from the grid – for the first time in the plant’s history,” it said.

Late on Thursday, the regional governor of Russia’s installation said that “for now, electricity supply has been restored to all cities and districts in the Zaporozhye region” after the earlier outage.

Official Yevhen Balytskyi blamed the earlier blackout on military operations in Ukraine.

“Due to a strike by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the power lines in the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant area, the territory of the safe zone of the 750 kV overhead line caught fire. The fire was caused by a short circuit in the power lines,” he said, according to CNN.

In a separate statement, Ukraine’s national nuclear regulatory inspection agency, citing nuclear operator Energoatom, said one of the plant’s power lines had been disconnected due to hostilities in the region. (ANI)
