Award-winning Ukrainian author Victoria Amelina has died after a Russian missile hit a pizzeria in Kramatorsk. The war crimes researcher and novelist became the 13th person to die in the attack, which human rights activists have labeled a war crime.

Victoria Amerina: Kramatorsk is under Ukrainian control but close to Russian-occupied parts of the country.

Kramatorsk is under Ukrainian control but is close to Russian-occupied parts of the country. At least 60 others were injured in the strike. Paramedics “did all they could to save her life, but unfortunately the wound was fatal,” the Ukrainian Writers’ Association said.

Victoria Amelina was dining with a group of Colombian journalists and writers in the Ria lounge when the missile hit. PEN Ukraine said she was taken to a hospital in Dnipro but succumbed to her injuries.

“It is with great pain that we inform you that author Victoria Amelina’s heart stopped on July 1. Her family and friends were by Victoria’s side during her final days,” the group said.

Since the Russian invasion in 2022, Victoria Amelina has been documenting alleged war crimes and has begun working with children near the front lines. Her first non-fiction book in English, War and Justice Diaries: Watching Women Watch War, is forthcoming.

A post on her Twitter page by Victoria Amelina, who described herself as “a Ukrainian writer”, showed her taking pictures of a bombed-out building in Ukraine. I have portraits of great Ukrainian poets in my bag. I look like I should be taking pictures of books, artwork and my young son. But I documented Russian war crimes and listened to shelling, not poetry. Why? “
