UK’s Prince William announces Earthshot Environment Prize finalists World News

Britain’s Prince William on Friday announced the finalists for his “Earthshot” award, which awards £1 million ($1.12 million) each to five winners for developing solutions to major environmental problems.

The 15 finalists in five categories ranged from a Kenyan start-up producing clean stoves to a city-wide recycling scheme in Amsterdam. The award received more than 1,000 nominations.

“They put their time, energy and talent into bold solutions that not only address our planet’s greatest environmental challenges, but also create healthier, more prosperous, and more sustainable communities for future generations,” William said of said the finalists.

William, who became heir to the British throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September, established the award in 2020, named in reference to former US President John F. Kennedy’s ambitious “moonshot” project and his 1969 goal.

Other finalists include an Omani initiative to remove carbon dioxide by turning it into rock, an Indian business to make a sustainable alternative to leather from used flowers, and a Chinese team trying to turn a barren desert into a fertile one. soil.

The awards ceremony will be held in Boston on December 2.
