dubai [UAE]April 28 (ANI/WAM): The United Nations Security Council on Friday unanimously adopted a Japanas co-author of the Afghanistan Files, condemned the Taliban’s decision to ban Afghan women from working for the United Nations in Afghanistan.
The resolution was co-sponsored by more than 90 UN member states, including for the first time more than 28 members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
“By passing this resolution, the UN Security Council has sent a clear message of condemnation and a clear call for the swift removal of the latest ban, along with others that restrict the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan,” said Ambassador Lana Zaki, Nusseibeh, United Arab EmiratesPermanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. “Stability, economic recovery and political reconciliation in Afghanistan are impossible without the participation of Afghan women and girls.”
The resolution calls for the full, equal, meaningful and safe participation of Afghan women and girls; emphasizes the urgent need to continue addressing the dire economic and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan; and recognizes the need to use assets belonging to the Central Bank of Afghanistan to benefit the people of Afghanistan.
The resolution also reaffirmed the integral role of women in Afghan society and expressed deep concern at the growing erosion of respect for women’s human rights and fundamental freedoms in Afghanistan. (ANI/WAM)
