UNEP-Abu Dhabi (EAD) yesterday watched a special documentary called “Our Ocean…Our Future” at the Expo 2020. This feature-length production showcases Abu Dhabi’s success in improving fish stocks The story was displayed as part of the EAD inspiration series for Expo 2020 Dubai-the Sustainability Pavilion to celebrate World Fisheries Day.

The event is part of a series of talks between Hammour House and “Sailors and Scientists”, a unique community art project at Expo 2020. Different parts of the community gathered to discuss how to maintain and balance food security, heritage and tradition, and sustainable development as a whole future.

In the event attended by stakeholders and partners, the audience can also hear the opinions and stories of actual fishermen who are part of the plan to improve Abu Dhabi’s fisheries. The meeting was chaired by Reem Al Baharna of the EAD Department, Fishery Management Manager and Featured Fishermen Hashim Saeed Al Romaithi; Juma Mohammed Al Romaithi; Eid Juma Al Romaithi; Mohammed bin Saber AlMazrui; and Hamad bin Garib Al Mazrui .

Since 2001, EAD has been monitoring the status of fish populations in Abu Dhabi and has noticed a significant improvement in the number of the most commercially fished species found in the waters of the emirate in recent years.

The increase in fish populations is the result of several positive measures taken by EAD, such as the establishment of several marine protected areas, the establishment of a commercial and recreational fishery license system, and the implementation of control equipment for certain types of fishing. These measures have been further strengthened through seasonal fishing bans and breeding season bans, as well as minimum catches for several key commercial species. In addition, EAD prohibits Gargoor fishing techniques and the use of purse seines.

These initiatives are part of the Sustainable Fisheries Program initiated in cooperation with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment MOCCAE. The plan aims to ensure the sustainability of the fishery and was launched in 2016.

Ahmed Al Hashmi, Acting Executive Director of EAD’s Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity, said: “We are delighted to share at the Expo 2020 our story of how we helped improve fish resources in Abu Dhabi’s waters. After rigorous work on a series of projects, This success is made possible by adopting a proactive approach to formulating influential policies-all of which are emphasized in our documentary. We have been unwavering in ensuring that we never forget our ultimate goal-to complement us We are grateful for the support of several fishermen who are very insightful and help us achieve our goals. At Expo 2020, they also have the opportunity to share their stories and experiences with the audience. Their knowledge is very useful and they are our success A very important aspect of the documentary has discussed this in detail.”

“Our ocean…our future” is dedicated to the fisheries sector, which is an important contributor to Abu Dhabi’s culture and heritage. The film also shows the burden of Abu Dhabi’s fisheries and EAD’s measures to curb the impact of overfishing on the marine environment, with the aim of regenerating and cultivating fish populations.

Fishermen play a central and important role in protecting marine life and have been an indispensable participant in supporting scientific research with their traditional knowledge for many years. They also help comply with resolutions and procedures aimed at curbing the decline of fish stocks.
